After both of the front-runners in the con test to succeed Liz Truss withdrew before any votes were cast among Conservative party members, Rishi Sunak is now all but certain to become the next prime minister of Britain. Swearing-in will be held on October 28.

While his challenger, the former prime minister Boris Johnson, withdrew from the race claiming he could no longer unify the party, he overcame centrist politician Penny Mordaunt, who was unable to secure enough support from parliamentarians to be included on the vote.

By becoming the first person of Indian descent and the first member of the Hindu faith to rule Britain, Sunak will make history.

“I pledge that I will serve you with integrity and humility and I will work day in and day out to deliver for the British people”: said the U.K. PM-designate Rishi Sunak at the Conservative Party Headquarters in London.
