Rubeus Hagrid remains to be one of the most influential and memorable characters in the world as one of the key characters from J.K. Rowling’s most well-known series of novels.

Anyone who has ever read the Harry Potter books or watched the film series is going to cherish Robbie Coltrane’s portrayal of Rubeus Hagrid.

His sudden death at the age of 72 appears to have torn a piece of our youth from us. Because he is so lovable, funny, and occasionally incredibly perceptive, Hagrid’s character is arguably one of the greatest in the fantasy Harry Potter series.

Coltrane was born in Rutherglen on 25 October 1950 to Irish parents from County Monaghan in Ireland. His mother, Isobel McAlpine, was a doctor’s daughter from Glasgow, Scotland.

As a boy, Coltrane was physically large for his age and classmates nicknamed him “Big John.”

Actor Robbie Coltrane was 6’4″. He was a perfect fit for the role of Hagrid. His height and his voice were perfect for the part.

The character of Hagrid in Harry Potter series is a half giant and is described as being very tall with a good-sized frame. He has long, wild, curly hair, huge hands, and “slightly gorilla-like” shoulders.

Hagrid’s hands are described as being like “giant splayed paws”.He has the widest stance amongst the seven Hogwarts professors. His eyes are also described as be bear-like with slits for pupils.  Hagrid uses both his hands to point out different things and he also has large ears.

Hagrid is described as having a shaggy mane of red hair and beard, but his hair changes to match his mood, sometimes wild and untamed, sometimes tame according to The Giant Book of Monsters. Hagrid’s eyes are described as bear-like with slits for pupils.

Some of his famous quotes are:

1) “Don’ you worry, Harry. You’ll learn fast enough. Everyone starts at the beginning at Hogwarts, you’ll be just fine. Just be yerself. I know it’s hard. Yeh’ve been singled out, an’ that’s always hard. But yeh’ll have a great time at Hogwarts — I did — still do, ’smatter of fact.”

(An iconic quote that Rubeus Hagrid told Harry when the latter first arrived at Hogwarts.)

2) “I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth botherin’ with.’”

(– Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 24)

3) “No good sittin’ worryin’ abou’ it. What’s comin’ will come, an’ we’ll meet it when it does.”

(— Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 37)

4)“There’s things more importan’ than keepin’ a job.”

(– Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 27)

5) “Family…Whatever yeh say, blood’s important. . . .”

(– Rubeus Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 25)

Hagrid is one of the most loyal supporters of Harry Potter in all seven books. Hagrid, who is also his first friend, always had faith in Harry. Throughout the series, he was never afraid to stand up for Harry and help him out of difficult situations.

See what the Harry Potter stars have to say about their memories of working with the late Robbie Coltrane:
